How to Measure for a Kilt Properly
1️⃣ Waist Measurement
Measure around your natural waist where you intend to wear the kilt, usually near the navel, not the trouser waist.
2️⃣ Seat (Hips) Measurement
Measure around the widest part of your hips. This is the most important measurement for kilt sizing because pleats require proper room for movement.
3️⃣ Kilt Drop (Length)
Measure from your navel straight down to the middle of your knee while standing upright.
Why Kilt Sizing is Different from Trouser Sizing
Unlike regular trousers, kilts are traditionally cut based on the seat measurement to ensure proper pleating and comfort. Adjustable leather straps provide flexibility of approximately ±2 inches.

Kilt Size Calculator FAQs
What size kilt should I order?
Use your seat/hips measurement as the primary sizing guide. Our calculator recommends a size based on seat for comfort and clean pleats.
Should a kilt sit at the waist or hips?
Traditionally, a kilt sits at the natural waist (often near the navel), not low like jeans.
How long should a kilt be?
Kilt drop is measured from the navel to the middle of the knee for a classic traditional length.
If I’m between sizes, should I size up or down?
Usually size up for comfort, especially for heavier tartan fabrics.
Do kilt straps allow adjustment?
Yes. Most kilts allow about ±2 inches of adjustment via straps.
