Description

Navy Gordon Tartan Hybrid Kilt With Dress Gordon Pleats

Deep navy cotton on the outside, the lively Dress Gordon tartan folded inside. It’s a hybrid kilt with real Highland roots and an easygoing, modern build.

A Tartan Chosen by a Duke

The Gordon tartan has one of the best documented beginnings of any Scottish pattern. In 1793, Alexander, the 4th Duke of Gordon, asked William Forsyth, a weaver from Huntly, for samples of the 42nd Regiment plaid with a small yellow stripe added. Forsyth sent three versions; the Duke picked one, and it became the tartan of the Gordon Highlanders, a regiment raised in 1794 that carried the pattern around the world. The clan’s motto, “Bydand,” means steadfast, and its chief is still known by the old nickname “Cock o’ the North.”

What Makes the Dress Gordon Different

Dress tartans were traditionally woven for evenings, dances, and formal wear, and they usually brighten a familiar sett with white. The Dress Gordon keeps the dark green, navy, and black blocks of the clan tartan, then adds broad white bands alongside the famous yellow line. The result is far livelier than the everyday Gordon, which is exactly why it works so well hidden in the pleats of a darker kilt.

Navy Cotton Meets Bright Pleats

The apron and outer pleats are navy cotton, a shade that picks up the deep blue already running through the tartan. Standing still, you’ll see a slim strip of white and yellow down each side of the apron. Once you start walking, the pleats swing open, and the full Dress Gordon flashes through. It’s a smarter, softer alternative to the usual black hybrid.

Leather Straps and D-Rings

Black leather straps with buckles sit at both hips, so you can adjust the fit as easily as cinching a belt. Black webbing tabs finish the edges of the waistband. Black D-rings hang from the front belt loops and the sides, giving you handy spots for keys, a wallet chain, or a small pouch.

Where to Wear It

Clan Gordon gatherings, Highland games, ceilidhs, pipe band events, and relaxed weddings all suit this kilt. A crisp white shirt brings out the white in the pleats, while a navy or gray shirt keeps things low-key. Navy or cream kilt hose and dark boots or brogues complete the outfit.

If you’d rather wear the clan pattern from waistband to hem, the Gordon Modern Tartan Kilt is woven in the everyday green and navy sett. Since the Gordon grew out of the 42nd Regiment plaid, the Black Watch Hybrid Tartan Kilt makes an interesting companion piece.

Customization & Care

  • Wash cold and inside out so the navy stays deep and the white tartan bands stay bright
  • Skip bleach entirely, even on the white sections, as it can yellow the cotton
  • Keep the leather straps out of soaking water and wipe them clean with a damp cloth
  • Line dry by the waistband, then set the pleats with a cool iron through a pressing cloth

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Gordon tartan is used in this kilt?

The pleats use the Dress Gordon, the brighter version of the clan tartan with white bands and a yellow line.

Do I need to be a Gordon to wear it?

No. Clan tartans are traditionally worn by members and families of the clan, but wearing one out of respect or admiration is widely accepted.

How is a hybrid kilt different from a tartan kilt?

A hybrid uses plain cotton for the apron and outer pleats, with tartan inside the pleats, so it feels lighter and more casual than a full wool tartan kilt.

Is this kilt suitable for a wedding?

Yes. The navy and white combination looks smart at relaxed and outdoor weddings, especially with a white shirt.

How does the fit adjust?

Leather straps with buckles at both hips let you loosen or tighten the kilt for a comfortable fit.
