The Leather

Inspired by the Smith’s Apron

From medieval times into the 20th century, blacksmiths and farriers wore heavy leather aprons to protect them from sparks and hot metal. The lower part was often fringed or split down the centre so each leg was covered while they worked. A farrier’s apron kept at Museum Wales, worn in Maesteg from 1930 to 1960, is made from two pieces of hide held together by thirteen rivets, with a long slit below. This kilt echoes those working aprons in its studded front and deep pleats that open as you move.

Chains, Studs, and Hardware

A scatter of silver cone studs runs across the top of the front apron. Below them, three lengths of chain hang in graduated loops from a hook at the waist to the opposite hip. At the back, two riveted straps with eyelets run from the waistband to silver D-rings, and a chain swings from each toward the sides. Swivel snap hooks at the waist let you clip on keys or extra chain.
